Renault Kangoo has been around since 1997. Over the years, they have
introduced petrol, diesel, lpg and ngv variants.

in malaysia, only the 1.4l petrol passenger version is available, and i
suppose the combi and express are diesel.

has there been any channge to the 1.4l engine since 1997, and is the engine
reliable?
is it underpowered for a car this size?

Heard a new version called Kangoo Sportif will be out next month.

Reliable to me means no engine breakdowns in the first 5 years, assuming
car is serviced regularly.

All Kangoos up to now in Malaysia uses the 1.4 8v SOHC engine, not the
European engine 1.6 16v DOHC engine. Combi and Express version uses the
1.4 engine. Unless they misprint the brochure or I saw something
different under the hoot last time.

Kangoo's engine is a rather simple one that's served the Renault range
for many, many years. So no reliability issues I suppose.

Auto transmission also so far so good.

No diesel engine. But if got, that would be great. I want one. With the
current petrol prices, its just crazy.

The auto transmission seems to have problems i heard.
Jerky and seriously underpowered. Perhaps current users can give more input on this.

ealier i did mentioned about my kangoo problem. call the service centre
and advise to wait for 2k mileage. yes, after 2k mileage, no more problem
as mentioned earlier (sound, vibration etc). so far engine good.
underpowered? this machine definitely not for performance but so far have
no problem with 120/130km on the highway. probably going up to the hill a
bit slow.

If going by previous Renaults models they aren't very good always got
problems and expensive and scarce parts..
Look at all the Inokom Permas(Ren.Trafic) vans used by gahmen practically
all the vans are in the scrap yard now .

hmm.. that scary . My past experience with waja 1.8 sure hell of an experience.
I'm for sure will go away from 'renault' related engine.

No offence to renault and waja 1.8 users eh :-)

I drive a Scenic II 1.6A. Car is now 6 months old, approx 17,000 km
mileage. No problems what so ever with the mechanicals and electricals.
Runs like a dream.. Only a few rattles which has been sorted out. Hope it
stays this way. Don't know about the Kangoo but I heard that its 1.4l
engine and electrical system are well proven and reliable as they have
been well debugged since the first model.

A cousin of mine drove a Waja 1.8. Now thats one real screwed up engine
and transmission. Believe it was from the Renault Laguna II which has
also been one of Renault's most un-reliable car. Same problems occur in
the Laguna II as well. Understand that the newer models of the Laguna II
have all these gremlins sorted out. However my cousin's runs fine now
after he abandoned EON's "expertise" and resorted to a third party
workshop specializing in continental cars. Never ever trust any Proton
with a set of continental drive trains !! They are clueless especially in
how to troubleshoot auto-transmission problems.

Hi grinsby

Just to tell you my experience with a Kangoo. This, I did it when I was in
Germany about 5 years ago. I rented a Kangoo (and at that time, it was not
available in Malaysia yet) and was using for about 5 days driving between
Berlin and Hanover and also to other smaller towns. I was really enjoying
driving it although it was my first time in Germany, first time on a
Kangoo, first time on the Autobahn, first time on a left hand drive MANUAL
car. I was clocking 140km/h all the time until I can feel the car going
woobly due to the speed. Worst still, my German colleague drove us back
using the Kangoo at 180km/h!!!!!!Shock But the car, besides it's odd look is
a great car though.ThumbUp
