Proton today launched the new Saga FLX 1.3, an improvement of the Saga FL that was launched only late last year. There are no styling enhancements from the FL so to speak, but the automatic variant now gets a CVT in place of the Mitsubishi F4A42 4-speed auto.

This development was already hinted to us by Proton earlier this month in an announcement that promised the eventual introduction of CVT models in their Campro line-up, but without mentioning which model was going to receive it first. The earlier announcement also stated that in the interim, Proton will continue to offer the traditional 4 A/T as an option alongside the CVT for the more conservative customers.

“The new Proton Saga FLX is the product of Proton’s continued commitment towards providing better performing cars to our consumers. This is yet another milestone in our quest to continuously improve our range of products to cater to the needs of today’s market,” said Dato' Sri Haji Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir, Group Managing Director of Proton Holdings Berhad.

As before, the new Saga FLX 1.3 is offered in two trim levels - Standard an Executive - each with the option of a 5-speed manual transmission alongside the brand spanking new CVT. Notably, the more expensive 1.3E comes with dual airbags, ABS, and EBD in its armament of safety gear.

“It is Proton’s intention to provide not only an affordable car to consumers, but also one that possess the technological advancements and safety features that our customers will appreciate,” Dato’ Sri Haji Syed Zainal expressed.

There is also a new colour in the palette - Elegant Brown, in addition to the existing options of Tranquility Black, Genetic Silver, Solid White and Blue Rock. Now available for bookings and can be viewed at all Proton showrooms nationwide, its prices are as follows:

Also announced today by Proton was its commitment to produce a new 'global car' code-named P3-21A, scheduled to hit the market early next year. The model will roll out from Tanjung Malim, where Proton currently makes the Gen.2, Persona, Satria Neo, and Savvy.

A special ceremony was held at the Tanjong Malim plant to deliver this announcement, where Proton actually showcased the P3-21A's chassis. Further official info of the car is not yet forthcoming, but this is widely believed to be that of the new Persona replacement model, teased in last year's KL Motor Show as the Tuah concept.

Editor's Note: We will be test driving the Saga FLX CVT at Proton's test track tomorrow. Stay tuned as we look forward to bring you more information and driving impressions.
