With 29 million units sold worldwide since the original's debut in 1974, there is little doubt of the Golf's importance to Volkswagen's fortunes. In fact, it would be no exaggeration to say that the Golf is the car that defines the Volkswagen brand, and its success is therefore crucial to the company.

The seventh-generation Golf was launched worldwide last year, and we even had the opportunity to try it out last year in the international media drive held in Sardinia, Italy. Our impressions then were overwhelmingly positive, and from where we are perched in Penang half way through our local media launch event, the good vibes of Volkswagen's latest hero car continues to sustain.

You will have the opportunity to try out the all-new Golf Mk VII in Volkswagen showrooms nationwide this weekend, after the vehicle's official launch on Saturday, 16 March 2013. At a nett selling price of RM157,888, the new Golf VII is priced higher than its predecessor, but it offers so much more in equipment that the hike almost justifies itself.

There is a reduction in outputs, to start with, as power is scaled back from the twincharged predecessor's 158hp to 138hp, but Volkswagen compensates for that loss with extra torque, which rises from 240Nm to 250Nm, and a weight reduction measuring 80kg for the Malaysian model. A comprehensive test drive review of the new Golf in its Malaysia specification will follow soon, but in comparison to the units that we reviewed in Sardinia, Italy, our local units feature marginally reduced specifications, although they still represent a decent upgrade from existing units of the Golf VI.

The all-new EA211 turbocharged engine features auto start/stop technology and brake energy regeneration to help it achieve an impressive fuel consumption of 5.0 l/100km and carbon dioxide emissions of 116 g/km. It does without cylinder deactivation technology (ACT) which we experienced in our Sardinia test units, and in our report, we erroneously stated that the 5.0 l/100km FC figure applies for ACT-equipped cars. To correct ourselves, a 1.4 TSI DSG Golf 7 with ACT will sip 4.7 l/100km.

Equipment to note in the all-new Golf 7 would include a crisp 5.8" colour-touchscreen infotainment system, which for the first time which we recalled in a VW test car, includes Bluetooth connectivity. Also standard feature are electronic parking brake with auto hold and multi-collision brakes that help avoid secondary collisions in an accident.

Our media drive programme of the Golf 7 will conclude tomorrow, after which a more detailed review of the car's credentials will follow.
